This series was created to highlight some of the new first-year Ph.D. students who are starting the CRDM program. We would like to introduce you to our first on the list of first-years: Bryce Stout!
“I’m originally from Des Moines, IA, and have my AA from Des Moines Area Community College, BA from the University of Iowa (in Sociology), and an MS in Communication from NC State. My past work has focused on gender and power in esports. I’m still working on stuff about that but my planned projects for this semester include a deep deconstruction of the essence of [Trading] card games with particular attention to embodiment and materiality and potentially some work exploring the idea of self when a person splits themselves into multiple online identities which they are actively maintaining simultaneously. For fun, I play Super Smash Bros. Melee for the Nintendo GameCube, and back in the Before Times I used to enjoy going to thrift stores both to collect VHS tapes and expand my wardrobe.”
